Hospital refuse is discharged from the ward through door 4, the door being opened either by means of pedal 8 or of handle 9. The refuse lodges in chamber 1. The operator then rotates handle 36 in steps of 90 degrees at a time, the door 4 being closed and maintained closed by engagement of plate 37, and as handle 36 is thus rotated to cause the rotation of shaft 21, three things are thereby effected in time sequence. Firstly, the rotation of cam 34 causes water from tank 28 to be released to flush chamber 1. Secondly, the rotation of cam 20 releases catch 17 to allow bottom door 5 to swing open so that the refuse and water descends down pipe 3 into pipe P and so into a furnace beneath. Thirdly, and lastly, the rotation of cam 27 causes lever 25 to close the bottom door 5 so that the system is now reset for further use. The furnace.-The refuse and water descends down pipe P, the water being discharged at 46 and the refuse being delivered by rollers 43 on to endless belt conveyer 47, which delivers the refuse on to belt 49. As the refuse is being conveyed on belt 49 gas burners 52 (which are brought into operation by photo-cell 55) operate to burn the refuse and the resultant ash is discharged either at 53 or at 40. A photo-cell 59 operates if the refuse is not being burnt to give signals positioned at the doors 4 to warn that further refuse should not be discharged theredown.
