952,611. filters for liquids; centrifugal strainer separators. F. F. RIDLEY. March 22, 1960 [Dec. 22, 1958], No. 37677/58. Heading B1D. Liquid containing divided solids of various sizes is introduced tangentially at 15, Fig. 2 (or axially as shown at 8, Fig. 6), to a screening element consisting of a cylinder 6 and a cone 11 terminating in a discharge pipe 12 and a restricted discharge orifice 3 ; the size of the orifice 3 is pre-selected so that all the solids unable to pass through the screening element, and a proportion of the liquid and of the finer solids (e.g. 20%), pass through the orifice, whilst the remaining liquid and finer solids emerge at 14. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the conical part 11 is omitted, the orifice 3 is at the bottom of the outer casing 2 and the outlets 14 are at the bottom of the cylindrical part 1 above a flange located between the bottom of the perforate cylinder 6 and the cylindrical part 1. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the-cylindrical parts I and 6 are omitted, and the outlets 14 are replaced by a single right-angled elbow from the base of the cone 2. In Fig. 6, seven tubular screening elements 19 are disposed between plates 20 and 21 apertured to receive them, and outlets 14 are replaced by a launder 22 leading to a discharge outlet 23. A single screening surface may be provided and may be corrugated or star-shaped. A launder 22 is provided as before. Two or more concentric or eccentric screening elements may be provided to effect series filtration. The screening element may be perforated plate with or without an internal or external wrapping of wire mesh ; or a cage of vertical bars, Fig. 8 (not shown), similarly wrapped. Alternatively the element may be of wedge wire construction. Also the cross-section may be polygonal. The outer casing may be omitted. The vertical or near-vertical disposition of the screening element ensures that solids do not deposit on it.
