954,767. Welding by fusion. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 15, 1963 [March 19, 1962], No. 10379/63. Heading B3R. In a gas shielded consumable electrode arc welding torch, ingress of air at the seam between a refractory gas nozzle and the torch body is prevented by backing the seam internally with shielding gas. The body 6 terminates in a sleeve 8 carrying integrally connected leaf springs 14 supporting the gas nozzle 13. Shielding gas is fed between the cylindrical body 6 and the triangular exterior of a guide and contact tube 1 to an annular chamber 10 having axial outlets 11 surrounding a removable tip 4 of the tube 1. Radial apertures 18 in the sleeve 8 pass shielding gas to an annular space 19 backing the seam between the nozzle 13 and the sleeve 8 and having a restricted axial outlet 20 into the main shielding gas stream. A wire or band-shaped electrode is passed through the tube 1.
