938,818. Washing gases; utilizing waste gases. L. & C. STEINMULLER G.m.b.H. May 24, 1960, No. 18366/60. Classes 51 (2) and 55 (2). The blow-gas from a converter 1 (Fig. 2) is collected in a chimney 2 with little or no admission of air and passed successively through a cooler 3, a scrubber 5 and a dust separator 7 to a point of use, a valved-connection 4 placed between the cooler 3 and the scrubber 5 enabling the gas collected during the first and last two minutes of each blow period to be discharged through another outlet. As shown, three converters share a common scrubber 5 and dust separator 7 and the blow-gas after passing through the dust separator 7 is burned in a steam boiler 9 also fired by other means indicated by reference 10. The annular gap between the mouth of the converter and the chimney may be partially closed by a latticework structure and the openings therethrough may be covered with mica. The scrubber 5 (Fig. 5) has sprays 15 and 16 and a collecting tank 17 and may incorporate a valve 4 shown as a cap which when lowered into the water in the tank 17 will seal the upper end of the gas inlet. Sludge collecting in the tank 17 is removed at 18.
