Abstract
A lining composition for the cathode pots of electrolytic furnaces used in the production of aluminium comprises a mixture of 40 to 85% (by weight) of particulate silicon carbide, 45 to 7% of particulate coke and 15 to 8% of pitch. Any type of coke or pitch may be used, the latter in liquid or solid form, and it is convenient to use up to 6 mm. particles of silicon carbide and 22 mm. particles of coke. Preferred compositions are 70 to 80% silicon carbide, 15 to 10% coke and 15 to 10% medium-hard pitch. The composition, which is conveniently mixed at 50 DEG to 250 DEG C., is a poor conductor of heat and electricity, may be moulded in situ and binds tightly with conventional carbon compositions so that a continuous composite lining can be formed as walls of the furnace with a base of conventional carbon composition.
