A web-roll pick-up and supporting apparatus comprises a horizontal, elongate, torque member 20, similar bearing blocks 22, 22a supporting the end journals 24 of the torque member 20, a stationary bed comprising bed assemblies 26 and 28 on which the bearing blocks are shiftably supported, opposed similar web-roll holding arms 30 secured for longitudinal sliding on the torque member 20, arm-actuating means indicated at 32, Fig. 5, as an endless chain arrangement, for oppositely sliding the arms 30 in unison along the torque member 20, braking means 34, Figs. 1 and 7, at the extremities of the arms 30 for exerting a braking effect upon a web-roll 36, motor means 38 (shown as a suitable hydraulic rotary motor) for limitedly turning torque member 20 about its axis in conjunction with arms 30 to the pick-up position shown in broken lines, Fig. 1, and returning the arms to the unreeling position shown. Shifting means 40 and shifting means 42 are adapted to shift the entire apparatus, excepting the bed assemblies, longitudinally and angularly respectively in a horizontal plane. The sprocket chain 160 of the arm-actuating means 32 runs round two idler pulleys 162 rotatably mounted on the torque member 20. A doubleacting fluid-pressure cylinder 174, Fig. 5, attached at 178 to the torque member 20 has its piston rod 182 attached to one of the arms 30 to provide the motive force for moving the arms along the torque member. In a second embodiment, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), provision is made for adjusting the taughtness of the chain 160 by mounting one of the sprockets 162 on a plate slidably mounted on the torque member 20. Also, the motor 38 is replaced by two similar, straight-line operating, double-acting, fluid-pressure cylinders 212 to provide the limited rotation of the torque member 20 from the pick-up to the un-reeling positions. The shifting means 40 is replaced by a doubleacting fluid pressure cylinder 211 for moving the apparatus longitudinally of the stationary bed in the second embodiment.
