Abstract

807,268. Feeding webs. HALLEY & SONS Ltd., J., and HALLEY, A. M. April 20, 1956 [April 29, 1955], No. 12382/55. Class 100(1) A web tension controlling device, of the kind incorporating a vertically displaceable tensioning roller supported upon a loop portion of the web passing between two idle rollers, is provided with a contact arm disposed between a pair of traversably mounted micro-valves in a hydraulic or pneumatic circuit adapted to increase and decrease the rate of feed of the web, the contact arm being coupled to the tensioning roll 30 as to be displaced in a direction dependent on the direction of the vertical displacement of the tensioning roll, to thereby operate one or other of the microvalves. As shown, a web 1 is ted by feed rollers 3, 4 from a supply roll 2, the feed roller 4 being driven by a variable speed gear 5. A tensioning roller 8, carried by an endless chain 9, engages a loop in the web formed between idle rollers 6 and 7. The chain 9 pases around sprockets 10 and 11 and carries a counter weight 12. Rise and fall of the roller 8, due to variations in web tension, causes rotation of the sprockets 10, 11 and sprockets 13, 14. The sprocket 14 drives a pinion 15 engaging a rack 16 slidable in brackets 17, such that an arm 16a on the rack 16 engages a valve 18a or 18b both slidable along a guide 20. The valves 18a, 18b are connected by flexible pipes 21 to a double-acting cylinder 22. A piston rod 22a slidable in the cylinder 22, actuates an arm 5b of the variable speed gear 5 to increase or decrease the speed of the rollers 3, 4 in accordance with the upward or downward movement of the roller 8. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the valves are actuated by an arm carried by an endless chain driven as a result of movement of the roller 8. Specification 744,032 is referred to.
