Abstract

929,594. Welders' eye shields. W. EVANS. April 16, 1962 [April 24, 1961], No. 14766/61. Class 97 (1). A welder's eye shield has a clear window 9 and a sheet of tinted glass 20 movable in front of it by means of a manipulating member adjacent the handle 33, said member being movable in two directions to position the sheet 20 in front of window 9 and to latch it in said position respectively. The member preferably comprises a bent lever having parts 27, 28, 29, 30, 32 which is rotatably and axially movably mounted in a part cylinder 26 fixed to the handle 33. The lever is rotated clockwise by finger grip 32 and part 30 lifts sheet 20 up to window 9. When sheet 20 is in position the lever is moved axially so that part 30 is latched in a notch 31 in the shield frame. The lever is then so positioned that if it was accidentally unlatched the weight of sheet 20 would try to rotate it clockwise but since the lever is off-set and is prevented from further clockwise rotation by the handle, the window is maintained in position.
