Abstract

Scrap titanium or titanium-base alloys are reclaimed by hydrogenating the scrap to provide a hydrogen content between 1 and 2% by weight, crushing the hydrogenated scrap and melting it (with or without virgin titanium metal) in an arc furnace under a vacuum of 10 mm. Hg abs. or better. 5-50% by weight of hydrogenated scrap may be formed into a consumable electrode with the virgin titanium and melted or the hydrogenated scrap may be fed into a furnace in which a consumable electrode of virgin titanium is melted. Other alloying elements may be melted simultaneously.
