Abstract

A method of refining copper or copper base alloys comprises the steps of melting the metal in an induction furnace without the addition of oxygen yielding substances but with the introduction of an oxygen bearing gas stream (air or an inert gas plus oxygen) until the oxygen content of the melt is up to 0.05% by weight, then covering the melt with a layer of reducing agent (e.g. charcoal) and finally reducing the oxygen content by a conventional deoxidizing treatment. The example of a conventional deoxidizing treatment comprises the addition of phosphorus in the form of copper phosphide and calcium in the form of a Cu-20% Ca master alloy.
