Abstract
907,937. Abrasive blasting. VACU-BLAST Ltd. (Vacu-Blast (Aust.) Pty. Ltd.). Oct. 21, 1960, No. 36123/60. Class 60. [Also in Groups II, XXI and XXX] The invention of the parent Specification is modified by the provision in the storage chamber 11 of a feed chamber 25, the upper portion of which is connected with the storage chamber by a passage 27 of restricted cross-sectional area. The passage 27 is controlled by a manually adjustable valve 28. A baffle 30 separates the passage 27 from a discharge passage 26. The base of the storage chamber 11 is closed by a disc 22 of porous material held in position against a sealing ring 20 by the action of members held by wing nuts 15. In operation, air admitted at 23 passes up through the porous disc 22 and fluidizes powdered abrasive which thus passes into the feed chamber 25 and thence to the discharge passage 26. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the feed chamber 36 is connected with the discharge passage 37 by a Pitot tube 40. The restricted passage connecting the feed chamber 36 with the chamber 33 comprises a conduit 41 having a control valve 42. The pipe 37 leads to a sandblasting gun 38 which is supplied with pressure air from a conduit 43 which also supplies air to the fluidizing porous material 35. In both constructions, the action of fluidizing the abrasive material results in the coarser particles sinking to the bottom of the storage chamber 33. The apparatus can therefore be used for separating particulate materials into different sizes. The invention may be applied to convey powdered fuel to fuel burners, and material having fire-extinguishing properties, powdered insecticide, fumicide, or a fertilizer, to an appropriate distribution point.
