Abstract

906,839. Wrenches. KAYNAR MFG. CO. Inc. May 1, 1961 [March 3, 1960; Nov. 15, 1960], Nos 7624/60 and 39166/60. Class 61. A wrench for applying torque to a nut &c. which has flat wrenching surfaces arranged in a polygon comprises an annular wall having a number of circumferentially spaced longitudinal splines of rounded cross-section protruding therefrom, the material of the annular wall being of a hardness of at least 50 Rockwell " C." The splines 14 protrude radially inwards from the annular internal wall of the socket portion 12. In a modification the splines protrude radially outwards from the external annular wall of a tool adapted to fit into a socketed head nut. The splines 14 are each in the form of an arc of a circle separated from one another by relatively flat areas 18 in the form of arcs of a circle having its centre at the centre of the wrench. The splines are arranged to engage the flat wrenching surfaces of a polygonal nut at locations other than at the corners of the polygon, whereby said wrenching surfaces are, in use, slightly deformed and hardened at said locations.
