Abstract

884,918. Ventilating. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. June 30, 1960, No. 22876/60. Class 137. A combined heating and cooling apparatus for vehicles comprises a housing which is partitioned to form an inlet duct 10 fed by an interior blower for recirculating air and an exterior blower for fresh air, an upper duct 14 within which is a cooler 8, a lower duct 22 within which is a heater 9 and a duct 18, 23 which connects a lower outlet compartment 21 with an upper outlet compartment 13. Valves 15, 19 and 20 control the intercommunication of the ducts and valve 16 controls discharge from the lower outlet. With the valves positioned as in Fig. 3, the interior of the vehicle is heated by air passing through valve 16 whilst the windscreen 26 is demisted by heated air mixing with untreated air and passing through adjustable nozzle 17. By closing valves 19, 20, heating only is provided; by closing valves 19, 16, defrosting takes place and by closing valves 16, 20 and controlling valve 15 in conjunction with valve 19 a variable amount of cooling takes place. In this latter case the nozzle 17 is turned to operate parallel to the windscreen.
