Abstract

An electrode for use in electrolysis comprises a support having a surface of titanium or titanium alloy which is wholly or partly in contact with a platinum group metal or alloy thereof. The titanium surface may comprise a solid body of the metal e.g. a rod of pure Ti or Ti alloyed with 5% Zr, or may have an inner core of a metal of lower electrical resistance e.g. Cu or Al, in the form of a rod, strip or tube. The platinum group metal includes the pure metals, Pd, Pt, Os, Ru, Rh, Ir or alloys e.g. Pt/Pd, Pt/Rh, Pt/Ir, Os/Ir. This coating may be applied by (1) electro-deposition, electro-less plating, (2) by applying sheet, wire, or foil by spot welding, riveting, or bolting on, (3) rolling on Pt in powder form, (4) drawing Ti wire through an all-Pt die, or a die with Pt inserts to provide a discontinuous coating, and (5) spark transfer, sputtering and evaporating. A final coating of Pd or Pt black may be applied to the smooth Pt coating. A coating of about 0.0001 inch is suitable. The electrode may be formed into a mesh or grill. The titanium surface is preferably pre-etched with couc. HC1 as described in Specification 758,013.
