867,917. Brazing; welding by pressure. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd., SUMNER, K. G., and ROBERTS, G. B. March 5, 1958 [March 8, 1957], No. 7733/57. Class 83 (4). In brazing parts of steel or other ferrous alloys to parts of titanium or titanium base alloys, brazing metal or alloy which will not form brittle intermetallic compounds with the parts is placed between the parts and portions only of the brazing metal or alloy-are melted to join the parts. The brazing may be effected by a resistance spot or seam-welding machine or by an argon-shielded arc torch and the brazing metal or alloy may be in foil strip or powder form. In making a vessel with a mild steel wall and a titanium or titanium base alloy lining the titanium is degreased, e.g. in trichlorethylene and scratch brushed and the steel is degreased, e.g. in trichlorethylene and shot-blasted, an 80% copper, 20% nickel foil is interposed between the wall and lining and melting of the foil at discrete spots is effected by a spot-welding machine. For brazing titanium to mild steel, aluminium, aluminiumsilicon, copper, 70% copper, 30% nickel, nickel, silver and silver-tin brazing materials were used. The drilling of a steel vessel and the insertion of plugs of titanium to which a titanium lining can be spot-welded is disclosed.
