A tube 1 projecting through an aperture in a plate 2 is secured by fusing with an electric arc a ring 4 of a metal alloying with the tube 1 and the plate 2. A gas, e.g. argon, shielded arc torch having one or two non- consumable electrodes is used. The plate 1 is formed with either a recess 5 or a projection 6 surrounding the tube 1. A mild steel plate 1 may be joined to an 18% chromium, 8% nickel alloy steel tube using a 25% chromium, 15% nickel alloy steel ring 4.
