Abstract
840,668. Casting-machines. TRIGGS, W. W. (National Research Corporation). March 7, 1957, No. 7555/57. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XI] An arc furnace for melting reactive metals such as titanium and zirconium, comprises an atmosphere-tight chamber 12 having a crucible 14, at least one electrode assembly 32, and a mould 45. The chamber 12 is first evacuated by a pump 50, inert gas such as argon is then introduced through a valve 54 to partial or full atmospheric pressure, and the charge 22 melted. The crucible has a counter-weight 44 and may be tilted about a trunnion 41 to pour molten metal into the mould 45.
