Abstract
1,166,199. Casting processes. A. DUNLOP. 7 May, 1968 [4 July, 1967], No. 30755/67 Heading B3F. A titanium or titanium alloy sponge electrode 17 in a chamber 11 is melted by an electric arc into a water-cooled ingot mould 12, the mould's flange 14 being sealed to the flange 15 of the chamber. On completion, the ingot produced in the mould is drawn up into the chamber 11 attached to the remains of the electrode 17. The mould is then swung away from the chamber on an arm 13. A crucible-carrying chamber 18 is swung beneath the chamber and sealed to the flange 15. A mould-carrying chamber 21 is swung beneath chamber 18 and sealed thereto. Chambers 11, 18 and 21 are evacuated and the ingot is lowered into a copper crucible 19 within the chamber 18. An arc is struck and the ingot melts into the crucible. The molten metal is poured into a mould 24 which may be rotated on a turntable 26 for centrifugal casting. The moulds 24 are preheated in an inert atmosphere in an oven 23, and are introduced into a mould carrying chamber 28 through a gas lock 22. While one mould-carrying chamber 21 is used in casting, the other 28 is emptied and a new mould installed.
