Abstract
1405167 Casting processes HEPPENSTALL CO 22 Nov 1972 [7 June 1972] 54052/72 Addition to 1366707 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] A method of preventing shrinkage cavities in ingots comprises forming a body 22 of degassed molten metal in a mould 10 and then continuously supplying molten metal to the mould by plasma arc melting an electrode 40 at a rate substantially equal to the rate of volume loss by shrinkage on cooling whereby the level of metal in the mould is maintained substantially constant until solidification is complete. The top of the metal in the mould may be heated by the plasma arcs during the melting process. The initial body of metal in the mould may be formed by vacuum stream degassing, the molten metal being supplied from a ladle (15) mounted on top of the vacuum chamber 12 in place of the portion 17. Alternatively, air teemed metal in the mould 10 may be degassed during the evacuation of the chamber 12 preparatory to the plasma arc melting operation.
