833,359. Pipe joints. FARBWERKE HOECHST AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT VORM. MEISTER, LUCIUS & BRUNING., May 7, 1956 [May 7, 1955], No. 14146/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 99(1). In joining pipes made of thermo-plastic material by welded spigot-and-socket joints, the surfaces of the parts which are to overlap are heated into a pasty fluid condition over the whole circumference and substantially along the whole length, the parts are fitted together and then cooled or allowed to cool. The softening may be superficial and to a varying depth and may be effected by a hot current of air or gas, by an open flame such as a ring burner, or by dipping in hot liquids, any parts not to be treated being protected. Cooling may be effected by quenching in water or oil, by applying such liquids by spraying or by blowing cold or cooled air on to the joint. Details are furnished of the depth of softening and of temperatures of heating and cooling. The outer diameter of the spigot may be greater than the internal diameter of the socket whereby ridges are formed immediately in front of and behind the weld. Various forms of joint are illustrated including an external or an internal sleeve welded to two pipe ends, three pipes welded to T-piece, pipes with conical ends welded together or to an internal sleeve, and a ball-and-socket joint. Apparatus for aligning the parts to be joined, and tongs for heating the parts are described.
