Abstract

A plastics pipe socket (1) for joining, by welding, two plastics pipe ends (4), preferably in the form of the ends of the outer sleeves on welded-together, prefabricated long-distance heating pipes. The plastics pipe socket (1) has a radially shrinkable outer plastics pipe (2) with an inner coating (3), contiguous therewith, of a weldable material. The outer plastics pipe (2) has a crystallite melting point which is higher than the flow point of the inner plastics coating (3). After attachment of the plastics pipe socket (1) on the plastics pipe ends (4) the socket, because of the heat which is supplied by an external tool (8), shrinks around the plastics pipe ends (4) so that the inner coating (3) of the plastics pipe socket is welded together with the overlapping surfaces of the plastics pipe ends (4). By this means a tight and strong joining of the plastics pipe ends (4) is achieved since the diameter variations between these and the plastics pipe socket (1) are absorbed by the inner coating (3) whilst it is fluid. <IMAGE>
