Abstract
830,366. Spade &c. handles. WARD & PAYNE Ltd. April 30, 1958 [June 11, 1957], No. 18305/57. Class 61. In a spade, fork or like shafted tool the tubular metal shaft 1 is welded at one end to a neck 3 integral with the blade or prongs and at the other end to a tubular portion of a handle formed from metal parts welded together to provide the hollow grip of a T or D-handle. The solid neck 3 merges into a hollow length 4 the circular end 6 of which is of the same diameter as the lower end 7 of the shaft tube 1 the ends 6 and 7 being welded together by electric butt welding or by gas welding. A hollow T-handle formed from two metal pressings 8, 9 welded together edge to edge along the seam 12 has a hollow end 13 of the same diameter as the upper end 14 of the shaft tube 1. Tubular plugs are forced into the registering bores in parts 7, 6 and 13, 14 if gas welding is used for joining. In modifications the tools are provided with D-handles similar to those disclosed in Specification 830,367.
