Abstract

1,173,714. Spade etc. handles. SPEARWELL TOOLS Ltd. 4 April, 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 16252/68. Divided out of 1,172,556. Heading B4K. A hand tool and in particular a spade, fork, shovel comprises a shaft 10 and a forked hilt 12 having a depending sleeve 20 and provided with a hand-grip 14, the forked hilt being moulded of synthetic plastics which so adheres to the shaft that separation of the hilt and shaft is prevented during normal use of the tool. The shaft 10 may be of wood e.g. ash, or tubular metal, while the hilt may be of polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, ethylene vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyethylene, or polyformaldehyde. The hand-grip, which may be formed separately from the hilt or integrally therewith, may, in the former case, be of ash. Where the shaft is of tubular steel or aluminium alloy its end is sealed by a cap 26. The upper end of th shaft is supported during moulding e.g. by injection, by a pin 30 of polypropylene or other plastics, the excess portion (dotted lines) being removed afterwards. Alternatively the pin 30 may be a steel nail which would be hammered into the assembly after moulding. Specification 1,172,556 is referred to.
