Abstract

838,101. Radiation therapy appliances. HERAEUS QUARZSCHMELZE G.m.b.H. Oct. 16, 1956 [Oct. 27, 1955], No. 31471/56. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XI] An infra-red radiator for therapeutic use comprises a set of two or more parallel individual tubes 1 permanently joined together, e.g. by wire clips 2, the set having a small total crosssection compared with its length, each tube having an inside width of 0.3 to 8 mm. and having a heating resistor 6 therein, the clearance between the resistor and the tube being not more than 0.5 mm. The tubes are of quartz, either translucent, transparent or black. The resistor 6 is a metal of small thermal expansion and may be tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum or niobium or an alloy of these, and may be a straight, undulating, spiral or coiled spiral wire. The tubes are supported near their ends by ceramic rings 3 secured to a reflector 9 by screws 5 and are in a bundle with darker tubes at the rear of more transparent tubes. The radiation at 1000‹ C. is of 2.3Á wavelength and longer and a tube of 8 mm. diameter may carry a load of 1 kw. per metre. The ends of the tube are sealed by a putty adapted to the thermal expansion of the tube. Stranded cable wires 8 pass through the seal and are welded to the resistor, the outer ends of the conductors 8 being connected together, conductively if required, to form a cable. The tubes may be evacuated or filled with a preferably inert gas, and the end seals may be not entirely hermetic. Each tube may have zones of different transparencies, the rear side being less transparent than the front. The tubes may be connected in parallel, but an adjustable series resistance may be placed in the supply to each tube; or the tubes may be connected in series so that with an even number of tubes, current, is supplied at one end only of the radiator; or the connection may be switched from series to parallel. A polyphase A.C. may be used, and three tubes may be connected in star or delta. Specification 695,507 is referred to.
