Abstract
1,257,284. Induction heating. SIEMENS A.G. 26 March, 1970 [29 March, 1969], No. 14718/70. Heading BIS. [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for the unsupported zone melting of a crystalline rod using an induction coil has the power to the coil fed into an evacuated treatment vessel via at least three concentric tubular conductors, these being numbered in order of increasing (or decreasing) size, the odd numbered tubes being electrically interconnected at each end and the even numbered tubes (if more than one) being similarly interconnected, this arrangement reducing electrical losses. The spaces between the tubes may be evacuated, filled with gas or preferably contain insulating material, and the outermost tube is sealed to the vessel by sealing ring C, although able to move axially with respect to it. The embodiment shown has 5 conductors, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, numbers 1, 3 and 5 connected by D and E and F and G and members 2 and 4 by H and K. A further embodiment has coolant channels in the conductors (Fig. 4) and a practical form of the invention is also depicted (Fig. 3).
