Abstract
835,249. Filters. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd. June 14, 1957 [July 4, 1956], 20715/56. Class 46. [Also in Group XXII] When pouring molten light metal into moulds through a filter element, a pool of the melt is maintained below the filter element so that the element is at least partially immersed and and remains so when pouring into the element is stopped, so that the element is maintained hot. The filter box 10 has a valved opening 20 and compartments 14, 17, 18 having openings 22 over each of which may. be placed a filtering medium, e.g. chilled iron shot or a compressed steel filter of the type described in Specification 787,960 which is referred to. The box is mounted within a reservoir 11, having a valved outlet 28 and a compartment 25 in which a pool of molten metal may be maintained by a weir 26, of such height that the pool immerses the bottom of the filter box. The reservoir and filter box may be pre-heated and made of mild or cast steel or alloy steels containing Cr, Mn and A1, or, particularly when casting A1, of plumbago. A wash, e.g. french chalk and boric acid in water, may be applied to minimise iron pick up.
