Abstract
578,977. Magnesium base alloys. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., PAYNE, R. J. M., and MURPHY, A. J. June 23,1944, Nos. 11966/44 and 15224/45. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In the treatment of magnesium base alloys and the production of pressure die castings therefrom, beryllium is added to the alloy to restrict the oxidation of the alloy which is melted in a compartmented crucible with communication between the compartments below the normal surface of the molten alloy, the contents of one compartment being left without a flux covering. A magnesium base alloy suitable for pressure die casting contains aluminium from 8 per cent to 10 per cent and zinc up to 1 per cent, the beryllium being added to the extent of from 0.01 per cent to 0.10 per cent. One form of steel crucible a shown in Fig. 1 has a partition b defining a comparatively large compartment d over which a layer of flux c is maintained and a smaller compartment e without a flux covering. The compartments communicate at the bottom as indicated at f. Scum is periodically removed from the top of the alloy in the compartment e and alloy is ladled from this compartment to feed the die-casting machine. Additional metal for melting, together with discard from the casting machine, surplus metal from the ladle and rejected castings are put into the compartment d through the flux cover c. The partition is extended above the top of the crucible walls to prevent the accidental entry of flux into the smaller compartment. In modified forms the smaller compartment is formed by a cylindrical member suspended from a cross-bar above the crucible or standing on the bottom of the crucible and having -intercommunication openings at the lower end. In a further modification, Fig. 6, a cylinder g of the latter type is extended well above the top of the crucible and is provided with a cover to form above the surface of the alloy a closed chamber supplied with a gas such as sulphur dioxide or nitrogen further to reduce oxidation. Ladling may be effected by way of an opening m normally closed by a spring-operated or by a mechanically-operated door n.
