Class 72 A method of desulphurizing liquid pig iron comprises pouring the liquid metal into a tiltable container having tuyeres which are above the liquid level in the charging position and blowing a non-oxidizing, neutral, or reducing gas containing at least 5 kgs per cubic metre of desulphurizing agent through the metal after tilting the container. As shown, a converter 1 tiltable about an axis 2 is charged with molten pig iron and blown, through tuyeres 6, with nitrogen from bottles 4, the nitrogen being charged with desulphurizing agent from container 3. The desulphurizing agent, which should be of such size as to pass a 20-mesh Tyler sieve, may be lime, an oxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, magnesia, or calcined dolomite which may be mixed with a reducing substance such as carbon, aluminium, or magnesium from a container 18. The desulphurizing agent may also be a reducing agent, e.g. calcium carbide or calcium cyanamide. The gas used may be nitrogen and ammonia, coke oven gas, or natural gas.
