Abstract
A detergent composition which has a pH in aqueous solution at a temperature below 50 DEG C. of 7.9-9.5, preferably about 8.5, and a pH of 9.4-11, preferably 10-10.5, at a temperature of 80-100 DEG C. comprises (a) an anionic or non-ionic synthetic detergent, suitably in an amount of 15-50 per cent (dry basis) of the composition; (b) an alkali metal phosphate, which may be a polyphosphate, suitably in an amount of 25-50 per cent; and (c) magnesium oxide, preferably in an amount of 1-10 per cent, the particles of which are "masked" with a coating of a substance melting at 50-60 DEG C., such as a fatty alcohol like cetyl alcohol, or paraffin wax, so that the magnesium oxide is "unmasked," thereby altering the pH, only when the coating substance melts. The coated oxide preferably comprises 40-60 per cent coating substance and 60-40 per cent oxide. The detergents to be used include the alkylaryl sulphonates and higher alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, as the alkali metal, ammonium, or organic base salts; higher fatty acid amides; polyglycol ethers of aliphatic alcohols and of alkyl phenols, and polyglycol esters of higher fatty acids and of tall oil acids. To keep the pH down at lower temperatures, acidic substances such as sodium acid pyrophosphate, or even sulphuric acid, may be included. Other additives which may be incorporated are silicates, such as waterglass, sodium sulphate, bicarbonate, and perborate, ethylenediamine tetracetic acid, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and such fluorescent dyes as 4 : 41 - bis - (2 : 2 - diaminotriazinylamino) - stilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonic acid. It is stated that, because of the rise in pH with temperature, the compositions are suitable for use both with proteinaceous material such as wool at relatively low temperatures and with cellulosic material such as linen and cotton at higher temperatures.
