Abstract

753,999. Travelling-wave tubes; particle accelerators. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 1, 1954 Feb. 27, 1953], No. 6009/54. Class 39 (1). In a travelling-wave tube the delay line comprises a first portion coupled to the input in which the input wave is amplified and a second portion in which the wave velocity is greater than the beam velocity so that the wave is attenuated and gives up most of its energy to the beam, the now highly bunched beam giving up energy to an output cavity resonator. The second portion has such a length that the wave is of negligible amplitude on arriving at the far end thereof. The delay line may be formed by a filter-type circuit, Fig. 1, comprising cavities 6 of the same length dimension and cavities 7 of progressively increasing or at least some being of constant greater length, the output being taken from cavity 10. Alternatively the delay line may be a helix, the first portion of which is of constant pitch and the second portion of which is of progressively increasing pitch, Fig. 2 (not shown). The cavities are coupled by apertures 5 and the difference between the beam and wave velocities in both portions of the line is about 10-20 per cent. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the far end of the helix is earthed and loss material surrounds the centre portion of the helix. A tuning screw may be provided in the output cavity. Specification 660,792 is referred to.
