Abstract
718,835. Annealing strip. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd. May 11, 1953 [May 22, 1952], No. 13018/52. Class 72 Strip metal is continuously heat treated by being passed into and out of a chamber containing a controlled atmosphere through one or more liquid gas tight traps, heated in the chamber and the liquid caused to transfer heat from the outgoing to the incoming strip. As shown, the strip 10 passes under a pulley 11 in a liquid bath 15 into an inverted U-shaped chamber 12 and under a pulley 11 in a second liquid bath 16. The chamber has an opening 17 by which an inert or other atmosphere may be introduced. The liquid baths 15, 16 may be of mercury or lead and may be connected by tubes 18, one of which may be fitted with a pump to assist circulation Fig. 2 (not shown). The liquid in the bath 16, heated by the hot strip, flows into the bath 15 and preheats the incoming strip. A single bath into which both ends of the chamber dip may be used Fig. 3 (not shown). The strip may be heated by induction.
