Abstract

Tobacco, either in a closed chamber or fed continuously by belt, worm or other conveying means through a tube, is treated for a few minutes by a high-frequency electric field in such a way that the tobacco attains a temperature of about 100 DEG C or somewhat higher, and resulting gaseous, vaporous or volatile constituents, which may be reaction products of nitrogenous and other undesirable constituents of the original leaf, are permitted, as by tobacco aeration and cooling, to escape at the end of the treatment, e.g. together with steam produced from moisture in the tobacco. Pre-treatment with steam and/or sauce substances and/or chemicals may be effected. The initial relative humidity of the tobacco is suitably between 18 per cent and 25 per cent. The chamber or tube is of non-conducting material such as porcelain, earthenware or glass. More than one high-frequency generator may be used in the continuous-feed method, but the chamber is situated between the electrodes of a single generator.
