Abstract

697,936. Road-laying machines. BLAW-KNOX CO. Sept. 18, 1951 [Sept. 25, 1950]. No. 21859/51. Class 107 A road construction vehicle has runners 11 between which the plastic construction material is confined. The material is deposited from a hopper 15 under a streamlined throat-plate 38 which is continued rearwardly of the machine to gauge the depth of the slab laid. A chassis 76, carried on wheels or other traction surfaces 77, 78, is driven by an engine 105 and steered by the wheel 85a and tows the runner and hopper assembly by chains 102. A centring bar (not shown) connects the front steering bar housing with the hopper to keep the runner assembly centred within the wheels 77, 78. Two hydraulic jacks 129 in front of, and one (not shown) at the rear centre of, the hopper, act to lift. the runner and hopper assembly when the machine is in transit. Electrically driven vibrators are disposed at the exit to the hopper and are supplied by a motor generator set on the chassis. A belting device comprising an electrically driven reciprocating transversely extending stretched belt 57 is carried between the runners 11. The machine may lay level or cambered strips and one or more lanes at a time. Further strips may be laid adjacent to the the existing ones and the road material which oozes out beneath the runners 11 fills up depressions in the sub-grade and provides a level track to guide the runner when laying adjacent strips. The apparatus may be loaded with weights to control the lateral extension of the road material. The hopper is charged by conventional cement mixers. When more than one traffic lane is laid simultaneously a groove may be formed in the road to accommodate coloured marking materials. The spaces between slabs may be filled so as to act as expansion joints or traffic lines.
