Abstract
Ground wood pulp is bleached by means of a solution containing a peroxide at a temperature within the range of 26 DEG to 49 DEG C. and, during the major portion of the process, the pH value is maintained within the range 10 to 11. The solution preferably contains from 0.25 to 10 parts of alkali metal peroxide per 100 parts of dry pulp. Sodium silicate may also be present in the proportion 6 to 10 parts per 100 parts of dry pulp. In example (1), ground wood pulp slurry of consistency 5 to 10 per cent is bleached at 38 DEG C. with a solution containing 1.5 per cent of sodium peroxide and 6 per cent of sodium silicate based on the dry weight of the pulp, at a pH of 10.0 to 10.5. In example (2), the ground wood pulp is bleached at 38 DEG C. with a solution containing 4 per cent of sodium peroxide and 10 per cent of sodium silicate based on the dry weight of the pulp, at a pH of 10.5. In example (3), the pulp is bleached at 32 DEG C. with 2 per cent of sodium peroxide and 6 per cent of sodium silicate at a pH of 10.2.
