[Class 72] The head of a railroad rail is protected along the longitudinal middle portion of its running surface from the action of a quenching fluid during hardening to produce on the upper lateral edges and sides a martensitic structure while the protected portion has a softer structure. As shown, a rail R is-supported in a quenching bath 10 of water by rollers 2 and held by a clamp '4 in such a manner that the central longitudinal portion of the running surface is protected from the water by a mask 20 of metal or wood which may have chamfered edges 21 and may be mounted on elastic members 22. A stream of water may be supplied from a pipe 25 under the mask. The quenching bath may be mounted so that it may be rotated into and out of the operating position by a rack and pinion gear, (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
