Abstract

933,860. Heat treatment. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd., and DAI-ICHI KOSHUHA KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Oct. 2, 1959, No. 33569/59. Class 72. Steel rails are heat-treated by passing the head of the rail through an induction heating device, quenched and then passed through a tempering device, both of the heating devices being arranged to operate only on the top surface, flanks and underside of the rail-head. The process may be made continuous by joining the rails end to end, utilizing jointing plates and the jointing holes in the rails. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the head of rail 1 moves successively in the direction shown through induction heater 2, quench spray 3 and tempering heater 5. Cross-sections of heaters 2 and 5 are shown in Figs. 2 and 3, these being different to ensure that in the tempering stage the metal temperature does not exceed the transformation temperature. In the continuous treatment apparatus shown in Fig. 4, rails 1 connected by jointing plates 8 pass over feed rollers 9, through spring-loaded pinch rolls 11 to hardening and tempering apparatus 13 and then over a series of rolls 10, the angle of inclination of which may be adjusted by screws 12.
