Abstract

The Provisional Specification describes a process for contacting gases and solids in which the solid is maintained in the fluid state by the upward passage of a gas, and is constrained to flow in a substantially horizontal direction. The solids may be treated with different gases or under different conditions by flowing through a series of vessels or through compartments in a single vessel. The gas is led into the base of the vessel and distributed by perforated plates which may carry granules or spheres which are not displaced by the gas stream. The process may be used for the production of water-gas from coal (see Group XII) or for the catalytic treatment of hydrocarbons, followed by removal of carbon from the catalyst by means of oxygen.
