Abstract
1354073 Manufacture of gases containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 10 March 1972 [8 April 1971] 11349/72 Heading C5E Air, oxygen or a mixture of air and oxygen is introduced into the reaction chamber 9 through the pipe 12, a hydrocarbon feed, e.g. a heavy fuel oil or a natural gas, is introduced through a pipe 10 and steam is introduced either through an annular pipe 11 or in admixture with the hydrocarbon in pipe 10. Carbon dioxide or water can be introduced through additional pipes parallel to the pipe 11 or through the pipe 11 if a mixture of steam and hydrocarbon is passed through the pipe 10. The pipes 10 and 11 can enter the reaction chamber radially and can terminate in a two-fluid vertical nozzle. Hydrogen-containing cracked gas is entrained by the hydrocarbon and steam jets to form an atmosphere near the hydrocarbon inlet which is rich in hydrogen and steam. The reaction chamber 9 is maintained at 10-300 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and the temperature is at least 400‹ C. but not generally above 1300-1500‹ C. The reaction products pass through the annular chamber 6 between the refractor lining 4 of the reactor and the tubular internal fixture 5, which can contain a catalyst 15 and/or an indirect water cooler 16, and leave the reactor through the pipes 13. A gas having a hydrogen : carbon monoxide volume ratio of 1À03 and suitable for the oxo synthesis is made by gasifying a heavy fuel oil, passing the produced gas over a catalyst of 30 wt. per cent Cr 2 O 3 on magnesia and then scrubbing to remove carbon dioxide and sulphur compounds. A gas suitable for the synthesis of methanol and having a volume ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide of 2 is made from natural gas. A heavy fuel oil is used to make a gas, containing equal volumes of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which is subjected to a carbon monoxide shift conversion with added steam and an iron oxide-chromium oxide catalyst; the hydrogen gas produced is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide and then passed to an ammonia synthesis reaction.
