Abstract
539,336. Road vehicles ; hand-trucks BULTEEL, W. G. March 26, 1940, No. 5417. [Class 108 (i)] A carrier for the conveyance of ammunition, water or other supplies over rough ground comprises an outer casing of cylindrical or barrel form adapted to roll upon the ground and a container so mounted within the casing as not to rotate with the casing. As shown in Fig. 1, an outer casing 1 adapted to roll upon the ground has an axle 3 secured to one end 14 and a container 2 is freely mounted on the axle. To give access to the container, the end 9 of the casing is removable being provided with a tubular piece 12 slidable on the axle and removably secured by nuts 13 to a cross-bar 11 secured to the casing. One end of the container comprises a pair of semi-circular doors 10 which can be turned in their own plane about the axle 3 between guide rings 16 so that either may be turned to a position in which it is superposed upon the other. The container is supported in the axle at this end by a cross-bar 15. When the container is to be used for carrying water, the doors 10 are dispensed with and a draw-off tap is provided and the container is fitted with a central tube through which the axle passes. In a modification, Fig. 4, the container 2 has a short axle 17 at each end, received in bearings 18 secured to the ends of the casing. One end 19 with its bearing 18 is axially slidable in the tubular end 20 of the casing to which it is normally secured by radial bolts 24 carried by the end 19. The removable end 25 of the container fits over the container body to which it is secured by nuts 28. Propulsion of the carrier by hand, horse or other means, is effected by ropes or shafts attached to members 4 rotatably mounted on the axle ends. When shafts are used these are connected by a longitudinal pivot to a U-shaped member the arms of which are connected to the axle ends, whereby free lateral rocking movement of the carrier is permitted.
