Abstract
535,245. Steel; alloy steel. PARK GATE IRON & STEEL CO., Ltd., and CLEMENTS, F. Feb. 2, 1940, No. 2032. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] In the manufacture of steel by the basic openhearth process, the slag-forming ingredients and oxidising reagents are added to the furnace charge in the form of a lime-bearing ironstone such as that found in Lincolnshire which also contains silica. The furnace may be charged with alternate layers of steel scrap, the ironstone and lime, the charge heated and molten pigiron added. Subsequent additions of ironstone, lime, flurspar and oxidising reagents such as mill scale may be made. If alloy steels are desired, the appropriate alloying elements such as manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum and tungstone may be added.
