Abstract

453,175. Vacuum cleaners. McCARDLE, L. F., 94, Baker Street, London. April 26, 1935, Nos. 12565 and 19846. [Class 8 (i)] Within the nozzle 1 of a vacuum cleaner a carriage 7 is movably, e.g. slidably, mounted, and carries a rotary brush or beater 23 and a pair of wheels 19 which when brought into contact with the floor by movement of the carriage actuate the brush etc.; pinions on the brush shaft engaging internal teeth on the wheels. The carriage is hollow and communicates with a hollow handle capable of a limited angular sliding movement on the carriage; pressure on the handle depresses the carriage. A slit or row of holes in the upper part of the nozzle plate may allow inlet of air to clean the brush &c. The carriage may alternatively be pivotally mounted on the nozzle casing, and actuated by a Bowden wire on the handle.
