Abstract

426,860. Magnetic separators. MORDEY, W. M., 82, Victoria Street, London. Aug. 21, 1934, No. 24095. [Class 72] In a magnetic separator provided with a multiphase alternating current system, the stream of material to be treated in a finely divided dry condition or the form of pulp is caused to pass through a path arranged longitudinally of, and adjacent to, the longitudinal and parallel portions of elongated loop-shaped windings forming part of the multiphase system so that the material responsive to the action of the field is swept to one side of the path and separated from the material that is not responsive to the field, a longitudinal portion of each winding being arranged between the longitudinal portions of an adjacent winding and separated therefrom only by an inert non- conducting non-magnetic medium. The material to be treated is fed by a hopper 6 into a launder 3 of non-magnetic material and arranged over elongated loop-shaped windings 1, 2, arranged as shown and separated from each other by air or wood. The responsive matter will move toward the side 3b of the launder and will leave the launder by a shoot 4, the non-responsive matter gravitating to the side 3b and leaving by the shoot 5. The launder 3 may be vibrated, agitated or jogged e.g. by an eccentric 8 fixed on a shaft 8, and may be inclined. In a modification, Fig. 5, in which two streams of material are caused to move simultaneously through the two oppositely moving side portion of the multiphase field, a second launder 3a is arranged below the windings 1, 2 and material is fed thereto by a shoot 6 at the same time as another stream of material is fed to the launder 3 by the shoot 6. The separated portions of material leave the launder 3 by shoots 4, 5. In a second modification, Fig. 7, the material is fed by shoots 6, 6 to opposite sides of the windings 1, 2 arranged vertically, the shoots having inclined outlets so that the material is spread over the surfaces of the casing 9 enclosing the windings. The separated responsive material is kept apart from the non-responsive material by plates 9. In another modification the material may be fed on to a travelling belt enclosing the windings instead of the launder 3. The windings in this form or in the other separators referred to may also be arranged that two laterally and oppositely moving fields are produced so that the responsive material is moved to both sides of the launder or belt the non-responsive material passing down the middle. Specification 165,822, [Class 72], is referred to.
