[Class 130.] A filter tip for a cigarette is formed by a disc 1, Fig. 4, having a cylindrical flange or extension formed by a plurality of inwardly bent projections 2<a> and filtering material carried or retained by the disc. The disc is provided with a central hole or a plurality of holes 4 for the passage of smoke and the filtering material may consist of silica gel, activated charcoal, compressed filtering earths, porous earthenware, cottonwool, absorbent paper, felt, gauze, textiles or silk in the form of discs, granules, sticks, or threads. The projections 2<a> may be alternately bent in opposite directions and the filter tip may be inserted so that the flange is adjacent or on the opposite side of the tobacco. Alternatively, two tips may be inserted and the filtering material enclosed between them. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the disc 8 has outwardly extending flaps 9 which when folded produce a container for the filtering material which is retained by tags 9<a>. This container may embrace the ends of the cigarette. The tips may be inserted before the tobacco, or tobacco may be removed or tamped down from the mouthpiece end before the tips are inserted. The Provisional Specification states that a tip may be formed by rolling stiff paper into a cylindrical tube having at one or both ends serrated parts, which, when bent inwardly, retain filtering material in the tube. It also describes a method of tamping the tobacco in the cigarettes before inserting the filter tips.
