Abstract
1308661 Tobacco-smoke filters; mouthpieces CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd 19 April 1971 [21 Feb 1970 16 May 1970] 8462/70 and 23854/70 Heading A2C A device for treating tobacco smoke comprises a rod-like or tubular element of filaments or fibres which are adhered to each other at their points of contact and which extend to the circumferential surface of the element and there form a plurality of longitudinallydirected grooves 13. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, a tubular element 3 is overwrapped with a strip of air-permeable paper 7 and united to a cigarette 1 by tipping paper 4 provided with perforations 6 to allow air to be sucked into the grooves 13 as the cigarette is smoked, dilution of the smoke thus occurring in the mouth of the smoker. In a modification, the tubular element is replaced by a similarly grooved rod. In another embodiment, dual filter rods are produced by uniting portions of the grooved rods in endwise abutting relationship with ungrooved rod filter elements formed from crimped continuous cellulose acetate filaments. The element may also be formed with a circular cross-section at one end 51 as shown in Fig. 5. In yet another embodiment, the element comprises a tube, the longitudinally directed grooves in the circumferential surface of the tube being obstructed by a contiguous or endwise abutting ungrooved tube, and the bore of the tube at the opposite end being obstructed by a grooved rod element of low permeability so that smoke passing axially enters the grooves and is filtered as it passes through the walls of the tube. Similar elements, of greater length and smaller diameter, may be inserted in a recess formed in the stem of a pipe or cigarette holder with air admission holes formed in the stem around the recess. The elements may be formed from a rod or tube of cellulose acetate fibres bonded with glyceryl triacetate by producing grooves in the circumferential surface thereof either before or after activating the glyceryl triacetate.
