Abstract

The sulphonation of oils and fats or their corresponding free acids is effected in the presence of esters of polyhydric alcohols with fatty acids having fewer carbon atoms than the oil &c. being sulphonated and in every case having not more than twelve carbon p atoms in the molecule. The products are wetting agents which are resistant to acids. In an example, castor oil is dissolved in triacetin and sulphonated with oleum. Glycerine and glycol mono acetic acid esters, and coconut oil fatty acid a -glyceride, obtained by removing the fatty acid constituents containing more than twelve carbon atoms from raw coconut oil or palm kernel nut oil and heating with glycerine, are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises the use of aromatic and hydroaromatic esters of lower fatty acids during the sulphonation; acetic acid phenyl ester, propionic acid cyclohexyl ester and coconut oil cresyl ester being mentioned. In an example, stearic acid is treated with chlorsulphonic acid in the presence of acetic acid b -naphthyl ester. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
