Abstract
Cyanamides of the alkaline-earth metals, including magnesium, are prepared by treating the oxides of carbonates with cyanogen or gases containing the same at temperatures between 300 DEG and 900 DEG C., preferably between 350 DEG and 600 DEG C. For calcium oxide the temperature should be at least about 300 DEG C., for calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide 400 DEG C., and for magnesium carbonate 500 DEG C. The initial material may be from any source such as limestone, dolomite, magnesite, witherite, or the oxides obtained therefrom, and is preferably in granular form. According to examples the cyanogen may be diluted with nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide or ammonia. In the last case, the carbon monoxide formed reacts with the ammonia to form hydrocyanic acid, part of which is bound by the lime and the rest leaves the reaction vessel in a free state.
