Abstract

In a process for the production of ammonium sulphate and sulphur, aqueous solutions containing mixtures of ammonium bisulphite with sulphite or thiosulphate, of ammonium polythionates with sulphite or thiosulphate, of ammonium thiosulphate with sulphurous or sulphuric acid, with or without ammonium thiocyanate, or mixtures of these substances are heated in vessels susceptible to attack by sulphuric acid, for example vessels made from chromium-nickel or chromium-nickel-iron alloys such as the chromium-nickel-steels described in Specifications 13414/13, 13415/13, 201,914, and 201,915, [all in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], whilst maintaining in the resultant products to the end of the operation a small quantity, for example 0,05-0,1 per cent, of the initial unconverted materials. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of free sulphuric or sulphurous acid, which may be added before or during the reaction. The point at which the reaction is to be stopped may be determined by nitrating one solution with iodine.
