Abstract

Magnetic materials, which may be iron or certain specified iron alloys, are subjected to a heat-treatment comprising heating in hydrogen or in a gas containing hydrogen under regulated conditions of temperature and pressure varying from a pressure of at least 10 atmospheres at 800-1000 DEG C. to at least 1 atmosphere at 1300 DEG -1400 DEG C., and down to at least about 45 mm. of mercury at between 1400 DEG C. and melting point. This heating is followed by cooling quickly through about 900 DEG C., working if necessary, and reheating at about 880 DEG C.; or the rapid cooling may be interrupted at about 880 DEG C. for some time, whereafter no reheating is necessary; or the metal may be cooled slowly under successively increasing gas pressure varying from about 1 atmosphere at 1400 DEG C. to about 15 atmospheres at 1000 DEG C. The heating may be effected by passing alternating current through the metal in a glass cylinder through which hydrogen is passed. Iron may be melted in hydrogen followed by treatment as above. The materials treated may be iron purified by means of calcium boride, or iron containing specified proportions of sulphur, alumina, ferrous chloride, silicon, aluminium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, ferric oxide, and nickel. The treated material may be used as cores for relays, transformers, magnetic clutches, diaphragms, inductances and loading material for signalling conductors. In the last case, after winding tape of the loading material on the conductor, strain may be relieved by heating at about 880 DEG as referred to above. Specifications 265,642, [Class 72, Iron &c.] and 342,360 are referred to.
