Abstract

299,553. Bright, H. Aug. 17, 1927. Electric appliances.-An instrument for electrically treating the vagina and other parts of the human body comprises a tubular casing A of vulcanite or other insulating material carrying conducting material B and a projecting absorbent pad G for an electrolyte, such as a solution of salts of zinc, mercury or quinine. The casing A contains or is connected to electric means for causing a controlled current to flow between the pad G and the conducting material B through the part of the body to be treated. In the construction described, the pad G is attached by screwing on a wire F which is secured to a partition C in the casing A by a threaded spindle D and a bolt H. The conducting material consists of a metal sleeve B fitted on the exterior of the casing. A battery J is disposed within the casing and has one terminal connected through spindle D and wire F to the pad G, and the other through a spring T, an insulated wire R, a conducting collar U, Fig. 6, a tubular stem N, a rheostat K and a spring contact I to the sleeve B. The rheostat K is of tubular form and is attached to a plug M screwed to the casing A. The current is regulated and can also be shut off by a rotatable plug L carrying the tubular stem N with an arm P travelling over the rheostat coil. The plugs M, L are marked to indicate the current. To enable the battery to be connected to a meter for testing, the metal collar U is replaced by a collar U<1>, Fig. 5, surrounded by an insulating ring V and a conducting ring W, the collar U<1> and ring W being connected to the meter. The battery and rheostat may be separate from the casing and connected thereto by wiring. Before applying the instrument, the part to be treated may be inspected by inserting therein a casing similar to casing A but without a partition C. The instrument can then be inserted into this casing with the pad projecting from the end and connection made between the metal sleeves of the casings to complete the circuit.
