Open fireplaces; outlets to chimneys; boilers, arrangement of; flue dust, collecting and removing.-In a fireplace having back and side walls A, connected at the top to a substantially central flue b by a crowning portion a which provides also an arch A<1> over the open front, a ridge a' is provided round the base of the flue to deflect the flames slightly downwards and thus increase the heat radiation. The flue b, which may be surrounded by an annular boiler e, extends up into the base of the chimney B, the space between the lower front edge of the chimney and the crown a being closed by a cover C. Soot collecting in the space surrounding the flue b may be removed through a door provided either in the cover C or in the crown a. The grate f may, as shown, support the structure, or may itself be supported in it. A well-fira embodying the invention is also illustrated.
